William Gallagher, my mother’s brother, always looked so handsome in the photo of him my mother had. Ensign Gallagher was a WWII Navy pilot with the aircraft carrier Gambier Bay. He was awarded the Navy Cross posthumously after his plane was shot down during the Battle of Samar in the Leyte Gulf. He was only 26. How I wish I could have known him.
